    The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is looking at potential legislative measures to help reduce levels of fraud, error and debt in the benefits system, as set out in the May 2022 policy paper, 'Fighting Fraud in the Welfare System'.

    The findings from the 'British Social Attitudes Survey' have now been published from a recent DWP survey which aimed to understand public perceptions of fraud, error and debt in the benefits system along with exploring the acceptability of proposed new powers to help inform future policy development.

    The UK’s payments regulator has published the first entry in a new data series tracking how individual banks have been affected by and responded to authorised push payment (APP) fraud.

    The Payment Systems Regulator collected figures from the country’s 14 largest banks, as well as nine smaller firms that were among the top receivers of money from fraud.

    The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act (the ECCTA) received Royal Assent on 26 October 2023, following over a year of debate and amendment as it progressed through Parliament. It is a broad and comprehensive piece of legislation which aims to tackle the use of the UK’s corporate, real estate and business sectors by criminals for nefarious purposes and address the reputation London sometimes has as a place where money laundering and fraud are commonplace.

    More than half a billion pounds was lost to fraud in the UK over the first half of the year, while the number of authorised scams jumped by more than a fifth, according to new data.

    Criminals stole £580 million through authorised and unauthorised fraud over the first six months of 2023, UK Finance revealed.

    Fraudsters took £580m from Britons during the first six months of 2023, according to a report by banking trade association UK Finance, which urged Big Tech to take more responsibility for online scams.

    The group called the issue a “national security threat”, with MPs warning that Britain risks becoming a “safe haven for fraudsters”.
